Where do ideas in drawings come from? How do we make drawings that come from a deeper place than just observing what we see? In this class, we will focus on myriad aspects of drawing; from utilizing different drawing tools to exploring various conceptual approaches. At the start of each class we will spend 15 minutes looking at and discussing the work of contemporary artists that use drawing in their practice. This class will encourage its participants to lean into their own personal styles of drawing, memory and experimentation. We will examine concepts like hybrids, pattern, personal histories, space and even freedom through mark making, materials, etc. Drawing realistically is more than welcome in this class, as realistic drawing is a skill that comes with practice, but realistic drawing will not be the focus or goal of this class. This class will explore what it’s like to make drawings based on different thought processes and experiments, in a non-judgmental, open and supportive environment.
