Next Year’s Words presents
Irene O’Garden, Bythema Bagley, and Julia Hickey
on Wednesday, November 15, 2017
Next Year’s Words, the New Paltz series celebrating local voices seasoned and emerging, town and gown, published and undiscovered, reading their poems, fiction and creative nonfiction, features writers Irene O’Garden, Bythema Bagley and Julia Hickey on its November program.
Irene O’Garden’s poems span the political and personal, from “Revolution” where Revolution/ is taught/ as a one-time trauma, to the love shared by a couple where
our books intershuffled like aces and hearts. / Your gloves and mine nestled in each other’s palms, to recalling the tsunami of 2004 in “What Will You Believe”: We’re not made of matter, but of mattering.
Bythema Bagley speaks of the lies welded into a wall / that separated me from light, family / and those who meant me well, in her poem “The Divide.” With an eye trained to see hypocrisy and the unequal equations of power and expectation, she claims her survival in the casino of life.
Julia Hickey’s poems, while protesting I have no special truth to reveal here and As for me, I give up on finding out / If I’m good or bad, are packed with questions, observations, sensory impressions and philosophical conundrums: What will water finally do for its bajillion throats? In her poem “The Moon Is Out / The Mode is Taking Over,” The skin is a cage made of / its own love. Primal elements permeate her world: All of your nets turned to water, / the handles of your knives were all fire.
There will be an open mic and refreshments will be served. Suggested donation: $3
