The Sherman Library is pleased to announce a special show of paintings and children’s books by New York Times best-selling author and illustrator Michael Garland. Inspired by beautiful and interesting things, he has written and illustrated thirty-nine children’s picture books and illustrated more than forty books by other authors many of which have received awards. The opening reception will be Friday January 11, 6:30 – 8pm. The paintings and books will be on display at the Sherman Library from January 10 until March 13, 2019.

His work has received many honors and is frequently included in the Society of Illustrators and the Original Art of Children’s book show as well as annuals from print, graphics and communications arts magazines. Recently, Garland was included on the list of the top one hundred Irish Americans by Irish American Magazine. In addition to his books, his illustrations have been featured on the cover of Forbes, Fortune and Newsweek magazines as well as bestselling novels.

Many of Garland’s books have received awards. Miss Smith’s Incredible Storybook won the California and Delaware State Book Award. Birds Make Nests was recognized by Correll Book as a 2018 Children’s Picture Book for Excellence, Bank Street Best Books of The Year and Outstanding Science Trade Book by the National Science Teachers and CBC. Pizza Mouse was awarded the Mazza Museum of Children’s Book Art 2018 and was a Caldecott Contender Selection and Junior Library Guild Selection. Fish Had A Wish was a Star Review of Publishers Weekly and was selected as one of Kirkus Top Twenty-Five Picture Books of the Year. Daddy Played the Blues was recognized as a Notable Social Studies Trade Book by the National Council for the Social Studies and CBC. Grandpa’s Tractor, published by Boyds Mills Press was selected for the Original Art of Children’s Book Show at the Society of Illustrators in NYC. Garland’s Miss Smith and the Haunted Library made the New York Times Best Seller list.

Michael Garland has illustrated bestselling picture books by celebrity authors like James Patterson and Gloria Estefan. Garland’s illustrations for Patterson’s SantaKid were the inspiration for Sak’s Fifth’s Avenue’s Christmas holiday window display in New York City. His Christmas Magic has become a season classic and is currently in development as an animated Christmas special.

Michael Garland resides in nearby Patterson, NY with his wife Peggy and is frequently asked to speak at schools, literary conferences and festivals across the country.
