Pearl Lau Exhibits International Travel Art, Sketches and Journal at EPL&M

June 1 - July 28

Free

Kristin Fowler, Ellenville Public Library & Museum (EPL&M) director, announced today the two-month exhibit of Pearl Lau’s international art, sketches and notes, drawn from her travel journals, inspired by tours to India, Mexico, China, Italy, Germany, France and England.

The exhibit will be on display during June and July. An opening reception will be held Saturday, June 1, 10am – 1pm at the library’s Art Gallery Link at 40 Center Street, Ellenville.

Lau, who splits her time between Brooklyn and Spring Glen, has been a NYC elementary school art educator for the past 17 years in Brooklyn, teaching about China through the use of art projects, her specialty. As an art educator, she has received travel study tours designed especially for teachers, including a Fulbright to India; two National Endowment for the Humanities grants to Mexico; and two Freeman Foundation grants to China through the China Institute and Columbia University.

Prior to her teaching career, she was an award-winning executive art director in publishing for 25 years, but drawn to education she switched careers, going back to college in her late 40’s to earn an MA in Art Education, becoming an art and art history teacher at a Brooklyn elementary school with more than 1,400 students from 26 countries. During her tenure, she received the elementary art educator award of the year from NYCATA in 2001 and the New York City art educator award from NYSATA in 2012.

She recently retired from the NYC Department of Education, launching a new career as curriculum developer in Asian Art for the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., and the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
