The Spring Dutchess Handmade Pop-Up Shop

Melissa Dvozenja-Thomas, Interim Executive Director, Arts Mid-Hudson

As cherry blossoms and magnolia flower buds mark Spring’s true arrival, we are swept into the many celebrations that come this time of year. College students are graduating, wedding season is upon us, and of course, we cannot forget Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. For all of these occasions, finding the perfect gift or memento to commemorate this time can be difficult. Luckily we live in an artistically rich area that provides so many opportunities to shop locally either from small businesses or the yearly pop-up artist markets. The Spring Dutchess Handmade Pop-Up Shop is the perfect place to start. Opening May 2 and running through June 15, artists and makers from five counties are represented in this boutique style shop. All are welcome to shop from over 60 artists from the Hudson Valley and can find locally made glass, jewelry, greeting cards, textiles, ceramics, wood products, prints, paintings, home decorating items and more at Arts Mid-Hudson located at 696 Dutchess Turnpike in Poughkeepsie.

Back by popular demand is Ashley’ Bakeshop, an organic farm fresh bakery using local and organic products in the Hudson Valley. Grabbing a cookie for later or to enjoy while shopping is always a good decision.

Looking for the prefect Mother’s Day gift? Janet Baskerville, Susan Bores, Teri Burkowske, Carrie Decker, Celia Calvo, Maggie Inge, Lori Meehan and Barbara Willmer are the talented jewelers you can expect to find. All specializing in different mediums, shoppers will be able to choose from handcrafted metals, beaded or glass jewelry.

Graduation gift have you stumped? Many of the artists have homewares to help that graduate move from a dorm to the perfect little apartment to start their new journey. Theresa Gooby’s tea towels, tote bags and t-shirts are hand screen printed with original art. Sonya Reynoso has both soy candles in glass as well as soy wax melts. Amy Rosen has adorable ceramic sculptures that are homes to little succulents. And many of the visual artists have original artwork at every price point to start a home collection.

If you are like my husband, you might have a slight obsession with coffee and tea mugs. With over 10 potters working with porcelain, stoneware and other clayworks, you are sure to find the perfect set of mugs made right here in the Hudson Valley. Oscar Burkowske is back for this shop with his lathe turned wooden bowls and PK Brown returns with his wood art, coffee and pepper grinders.

With so many diverse offerings you will be able to get all your spring celebrations covered. Bring your list and be prepared to go home with a little something for yourself too!
