Art in the Loft Opens
Melissa Dvozenja-Thomas, Director, Development & Marketing, Arts Mid-Hudson for The Poughkeepsie Journal
The official start of summer is upon us. This often means we take a little extra time to enjoy the outdoors, travel, and explore destinations in our own neck of the woods. Millbrook Vineyards and Winery is conveniently located in Millbrook, New York and has been producing high-quality Hudson Valley Wines for the past 35 years. Recently, the winery has opened its Annual Art in the Loft Wine Label Competition. This juried exhibition is in partnership with Arts Mid-Hudson and adds another beautifully crafted detail to your visit to the winery. The seasonal art exhibit brings the upstairs loft to life and creates a unique opportunity to view the works of talented, regional artists. Art in the Loft 2022 is a juried exhibition and sale of fine art by 14 Arts Mid-Hudson members. Each piece of art brings a different perspective, theme and medium to the loft all with the cohesiveness of a traditional gallery exhibit.
James Bennett’s “Running Like the Wind,” is a dream-like image of intertwining ribbon almost appearing like a D.N.A. strand. Bennett states that the painting “presents the movement, rhythm, and dynamic interplay of just four lines (four fundamental forces of nature, four seasons, four points of the compass, etcetera. ). The compositions relate to movement (currents and paths) in nature, music, and life in general.”
“Black Monarch” by Marielena Ferrer is a silkscreen monoprint, acrylic on tissue paper. Monarch butterflies “embody life’s natural freedom,” says Ferrer. They “move without restraint from one country or region and settle in another.”
Vanessa Joy’s “Burst” is a 24”x24” acrylic on canvas abstract painting that can bring the viewer through any mood. Starting at the left side of the painting, the shapes and colors are calm and light. As your eye moves to the center of the canvas, something changes. There is an intersection of worlds that lead to the other side of the canvas full of free-form shapes and bold, bright colors.
“Elephant Skin” by Mimi Czajka Graminski was created using thread as the drawing material. The intricate stitching and overstitching on raw linen canvas creates incredible patterns that can be truly appreciated with a closer look. Once outside of the tightly bound stitches, the magenta and teal threads are loose and hang free like letting your hair down. The blending of these two states, the tightly wound and loose freedom, is truly inspiring.
Visitors to the winery are invited to vote for the art they would most like to see featured on a wine label, a friendly competition that has been enjoyed for over two decades. The winner of the Wine Label Competition will be announced at the exhibit’s closing reception on Sunday, November 13, 2-4pm.
Participating Artists: Robin Adler, Debbie Auer-Breithaupt, James Bennett, Marieken Cochius, Marielena Ferrer, Carly Forestieri, Raimundo Gaby, Jerome Goldberg, Mimi Czajka Graminski, Vanessa Joy, Erin Koch, Kristen Rego, Phyllis Segura, and Ilga Ziemins-Kurens
