Art in the Loft Closing Event

Melissa Dvozenja-Thomas, Executive Director, Arts Mid-Hudson

Fall and winter gatherings are just around the corner. When joining your loved ones, do you find yourself giving the same host gift? Flowers, dessert, or maybe a bottle of wine? When bringing a host gift, I always like to find something with a story behind it. If you are like me and usually lean towards giving a bottle of wine, might I suggest something local with a Hudson Valley story? Millbrook Vineyards & Winery has a fun opportunity that invites the public into wine label design. Each year, in collaboration with Arts Mid-Hudson, they produce a wine label competition called Art in the Loft. Art in the Loft brings the upstairs loft at the winery to life and creates a unique opportunity to view the works of talented, regional artists as well as the opportunity to vote on which piece of art would look best as a wine label. Each piece of art brings a different perspective, theme, and medium to the loft all with the cohesiveness of a traditional gallery exhibit. On November 12 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. you are invited to join the exhibit’s closing event where the artists will talk about their inspiration, and the winner of this year’s competition will be unveiled.

The voting started Memorial Day weekend and runs through the beginning of November. Which of the 16 artists will win this year’s competition?

“The Mighty Hudson” by Maureen Lohan-Bremer is alluring in its composition. The image, though recognizable as the Hudson River, creates a sense of wonder and mystery. Lohan-Bremer said, “Nature has always been an abundant source of inspiration for me. Visual elements of light, color, line, texture, and motion are used to create expressive interpretations of the natural world that evoke an emotional response.”

Joy Bird’s, “Body Paint,” is not your ordinary silhouette. Her watercolor and gouache paintings, mounted on board juxtapose flat planes and brilliant color with intricate patterns, forming rhythmic design arrangements. “Mardi Gras” by Robin Adler uses line, shape, and movement in her celebratory abstract work. ”Mardi Gras was in progress for about a year,” Adler stated. “The light appears to me like a lantern. The soft and blurry color palette is reminiscent of a celebration, a festival. This piece was named for the colors. It reminded me of New Orleans.”

“The summer day in Windham, NY,” by Musen Lin is acrylic on canvas. He strives to combine Chinese painting philosophy with landscape to evoke different visual experiences while focusing on finding and creating the beauty of nature. Lin said, “I always bring my painting tools with me when I go hiking or visiting a new place. These selected mini paintings are plein-air paintings. Plein air is the simplest happiness to me.”

All are welcome to sip back, relax, and join the closing reception on November 13. Mingle with the artists, indulge in hors d’oeuvres and desserts by Simply Gourmet, and groove to live music by the Swing Vipers. And of course, enjoy the incredible wine from Millbrook Vineyards & Winery! For tickets and more information: www.artsmidhudson.org/art-in-the-loft-closing
