The Holiday Dutchess Handmade Pop-Up Shop

Melissa Dvozenja-Thomas, Executive Director, Arts Mid-Hudson

It’s that time of year when Mother Nature paints beautiful autumn colors throughout our region, which reminds us of the upcoming holiday season. The time when you show gratitude for the goodness in your life, reconnect with family and friends, share food, and exchange gifts. Finding that perfect gift for the people in your life can sometimes be a struggle, but luckily we live in an artistically rich area that provides many opportunities to shop locally, either from small businesses or the yearly pop-up artist markets. The Holiday Dutchess Handmade Pop-Up Shop is the perfect place to start. Opening November 8 and running through December 14, artists and makers from five counties are represented in this boutique-style shop. All are welcome to shop from 65 artists from the Hudson Valley and can find locally-made glass, jewelry, greeting cards, textiles, ceramics, wood products, prints, paintings, home decors, and more at Arts Mid-Hudson located at 696 Dutchess Turnpike in Poughkeepsie.

If you are looking for the ideal gift for an office exchange, consider something from our 25 visual and mixed media artists who have created a colorful portfolio of matted prints, original paintings, notecards, wearables, and more that will have you ready for any gift exchange.

Textile and fiber gifts are a wonderful way to share warm wishes. You can’t go wrong with cozy knitted and printed scarves, hats, shawls, and blankets from six local fiber artists. For one-of-a-kind jewelry, Janet Baskerville, Jamila Dawkins, Marie Elliot, Heather Iori, Nancy Jegekla, Barbara Shapley, Jenny Sweeny, and Barbara Willmer are all talented jewelers specializing in different mediums. Shoppers will be able to choose from handcrafted metals, beaded, or glass jewelry.

Have a book lover in your life? Many of the visual artists create bookmarks, which would go well with a book of poetry by Calling All Poets or a newly self-published book by Cara Hochhalter about pollinators entitled “Where Do Butterflies Go at Night? and Other Pollinator Ponderings”.

If you are like me, there is something extra special about a new mug this time of year for tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and just about anything else. With artists like Maryam Ali, Peggy Farrington, Anna Frumes, Lynn James, Myah Perino, Marilyn Price, Amy Rosen, Michele Ullian, and Xuewu Zheng working with porcelain, stoneware, and other clayworks, you are sure to find the perfect set of mugs, bowls, or decorative dishware for you or a friend.

Nicole Hughes is back this year with her stunning reclaimed wood cheese boards and utensils with acrylic pour, lathe-turned wooden bowls by Oscar Burkowske, laser-cut wood ornaments by Yvonne Laube, wine caddies by Antonio Hung, boxes by Harry Stanford and wooden household items by Peter Brown and Hélène Kaufman.

This year’s opening will be a truly joyous occasion as it coincides with the 60th Anniversary Ribbon Cutting for Arts Mid-Hudson. So bring your list and be prepared to celebrate and go home with a little something for yourself too!
