Poughkeepsie Open Studios

Linda Marston-Reid, Executive Director, Arts Mid-Hudson for The Poughkeepsie Journal

The Poughkeepsie Open Studios celebrates its 7th year offering a close-up view of local artists’ works. This annual Father’s Day weekend event provides the opportunity to visit 14 locations including artist’s studios, galleries, arts organizations and “pop-up” spaces exhibiting or demonstrating a multitude of artistic practices. The self-guided tour also allows visitors to meet the artists that live, work, and teach in Poughkeepsie.

There is so much to see that I can recommend that visitors start close to the Hudson River at Zhane's Palette Studio, where they can see “Visions of Juneteenth” by Azhané. Moving along Main Street towards the center of Poughkeepsie visitors will come upon the Victorian buildings that are now called the Cunneen Hackett Arts Center with both of their spaces featuring exhibits by local artists. The theatre includes two galleries: on the right the artworks of Andrés San Millán are featured, and the gallery on the left exhibits the works of Suzanne Rees, Erin Sullivan, and Onaje Benjamin. Across the street the arts center shows the photography of Barbara Todd and upstairs, Shirley Parker-Benjamin. Across the street from the Cunneen Hackett Arts Center you will see photography by Lady Ramsden at The Great Studio.

Moving along the Main Street corridor, be sure and stop at the Adriance Public Library and see Paul Kimiotek’s one person exhibit in the Rotunda Gallery. There are several recognizable landmarks among the pen and ink artworks on display. In the same area, Barrett Arts Center features three exhibits under one roof, including the mesmerizing “Fun House” show. One block over check out Gallery 40 showing the fantastical paintings of Tiantian Ma.

If the weather is fine for walking, park and check out the outdoor gallery at 178 Main Street featuring artworks affixed to the brick building façade. The local artists shown on this wall were selected by Nestor Madalengoitia: if you step around to the building’s front facing on Main Street, you will see some of his murals.

A few steps further down Main Street you will find Queen City 15 Gallery spotlighting the work of Mary Flad and Mary Ann Glass, as well as a variety of artworks of the 11 member artists. WomensWork.art Gallery is located right off Main Street – don’t miss the opportunity to see over 30 artists and artisans in one location.

Art Centro, Poughkeepsie’s local clay studio, will be holding demonstrations throughout Saturday. Visitors can see techniques and finished products for sale, as well as an art gallery. Directly next door, the newly renovated Trolley Barn Gallery exhibits, “Up Close & Personal,” an exhibition featuring artworks from national and international artists selected by youth curators. The artworks reveal influences of a year in isolation and personal reflection. Look for Cathy Schmitz in her “The Poet is In” booth, where she creates a personal poem for visitors based on their inspirational thought.

The final stop on your tour is the Poughkeepsie Underwear Factory, a multi-use space with artists’ studios and a printmaking lab on the second floor.
