The Straight Story

Melissa Dvozenja-Thomas, Executive Director, Arts Mid-Hudson

There’s a unique magic in watching a film together in a theater, where the collective gasps, laughter, and emotions of the audience create an unforgettable shared experience. The Kingston Film Foundation is hosting a special, free screening of “The Straight Story,” a heartwarming tribute to the late, great director David Lynch. Known for his avant-garde approach to filmmaking, Lynch described this particular film as his “most experimental” work—a G-rated, live-action Disney movie that stands out in his illustrious career. Celebrate Lynch’s unique legacy on Saturday, March 29, at Bethany Hall at Old Dutch Church in Kingston. Doors will open at 6:30 pm, and the film will begin promptly at 7:30 pm.

“The Straight Story” stars the legendary Richard Farnsworth, Sissy Spacek, and Harry Dean Stanton. It tells the true and touching story of Alvin Straight, an elderly farmer who embarks on an extraordinary journey from Iowa to Wisconsin on his trusty lawn tractor, all to visit his ailing brother. It’s a tale of determination, family, and the simple beauty of life—an experience that resonates with audiences of all ages.

Before the film, attendees will be treated to a special video tribute to David Lynch, who passed away in January. This tribute will highlight his unparalleled contribution to cinema and his influence on filmmakers and audiences alike.

“The Kingston Film Foundation emerged from a shared passion among friends to create a nonprofit that celebrates and revitalizes historically and culturally significant second-run films,” stated Brian Whitney, Kingston Film Foundation Board President. “By hosting innovative pop-up events, we aim to highlight underrepresented voices and foster a vibrant community with the long-term vision of establishing a permanent cultural hub in Kingston.”

Adding to the evening’s charm, local favorite Little Rye Bakehouse will be on-site, offering their renowned “damn fine” cherry and salted maple pie. Pair your slice of pie with a cup of regular or decaf coffee for the perfect movie night treat.

Capture the moment with a photo at the special David Lynch photo spot, designed to immerse you in the quirky and imaginative world Lynch was famous for creating. It’s a fantastic opportunity to create lasting memories with friends and fellow film lovers.

As a token of appreciation and to commemorate this special evening, the Kingston Film Foundation is offering a limited-edition poster. These commemorative posters will be available for purchase, and all proceeds will benefit the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to bring more unique cinematic experiences to the community.

This event promises to be a memorable evening of film, food, and fun, celebrating a director who dared to defy norms and explore the depths of human emotion and storytelling. Whether you’re a long-time Lynch fan or new to his work, “The Straight Story” offers a heartfelt glimpse into the human spirit, making it a must-see.
