Emilia

Melissa Dvozenja-Thomas, Executive Director, Arts Mid-Hudson

As National Women’s Month draws to a close, we celebrate the pioneering women of the Hudson Valley, including Sojourner Truth, whose resonant voice championed abolition and women’s rights, and Eleanor Roosevelt, who redefined the role of First Lady through her steadfast advocacy for social justice and human rights. We also draw inspiration from trailblazers beyond our region, like Emilia Bassano Lanier, who became the first woman to publish a volume of poetry in England, paving the way for future generations of female writers and thinkers.

In the heart of Rhinecliff, a theatrical event is poised to revive Lanier’s forgotten legacy. Renowned for her radical, feminist, and disruptive poetry, Lanie’s work stands as one of the earliest collections published by a woman in England. The Rhinebeck Theatre Society is resurrecting her story through Morgan Lloyd Malcolm’s Olivier award-winning play, “Emilia” bringing her enduring influence to the forefront once more.

For centuries, Emilia’s voice was silenced, her contributions overshadowed by the male playwrights of her era, possibly even serving as the muse for Shakespeare’s ‘Dark Lady.’ This spring, audiences will have the unique opportunity to rediscover her story, which unfolds with passion and tenacity on the stage of the Morton Memorial Library from March 28 to April 6.

Chantez Engeleit, one of the three actors portraying Emilia at different stages of her life, passionately describes the importance of this production: “Though inequality presented itself at every turn, Emilia remained dedicated to her work and took action to make change with the courageous women she met along her path.” Her words echo the timeless struggle for gender equality, a fight that unites the play’s diverse ensemble cast of all-female actors, aged 14 to 80.

This powerful narrative is brought to life by a talented cast including LotuZ, AnnChris Warren, Maggie Bogan, Kathy Bailey, Sandra Colacino, Becca Ann Frank, Cindy Kubik, Ivy Malone, Maria Elena Maurin, Nadya Rockefeller, Linda Roper, Lauren Silverman, and Wendy Urban-Mead. Under the direction of Ellen Honig, with Miranda Haydn as assistant director, the production promises to be a rich tapestry of emotion, resilience, and empowerment.

“Emilia” is more than a play; it is a celebration of women’s voices, past and present. It serves as a poignant reminder of the countless stories that have been lost to history and an invitation to honor those who dared to defy societal norms.

Whether you are a seasoned theatergoer or someone seeking to explore the rich tapestry of women’s history, “Emilia” is a must-see event. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness a story of courage and creativity that transcends time.
