Kingston Independent Comic Expo
Melissa Dvozenja-Thomas, Executive Director, Arts Mid-Hudson
As spring unfolds, comic enthusiasts might find themselves in a season of vibrant storytelling and artistic exploration. The Kingston Independent Comic Expo (KICx) is making its much-anticipated return to Kingston for its second year, and it’s set to be an unforgettable day of creativity and community. On Saturday, April 12, 2025, head to the historic Old Dutch Church from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for the chance to immerse yourself in a world of independent comics and illustrative art.
KICx is not your typical comic convention. It is a unique, curated event that shines a spotlight on independent comic book artists, writers, publishers, zine makers, and illustrators. The expo celebrates originality and storytelling through the graphic medium, offering an alternative to the traditional “comic con” experience. Whether you’re a die-hard comic fan or someone who appreciates the art of storytelling, KICx promises something special for everyone.
The minds behind this creative venture are Joe Gonzalez, Cristopher Livecchi, and Kevin Michael Rowe. Joe Gonzalez, known for creating Art Walk Kingston and producing the long- running Comic News Insider podcast, joins forces with Cristopher Livecchi, owner of World’s End Comics and a writer/performer on Radio Wiltwyck, and Kevin Michael Rowe, the writer/creator of the self-published comic series N.A.R.L.I. Together, they have crafted an event that highlights the vibrant creative community in Kingston.
“There’s a strong creative community in the Hudson Valley eager to participate,” Gonzalez observed. “The show features an incredibly diverse mix of creators, appealing to anyone interested in literature, graphic design, and publishing. “
Last year’s premiere event drew over 300 attendees, creating a buzz that still echoes in the local art scene. With such a successful debut, more than 150 applications came in for 2025. This year’s expo will feature 45 curated exhibitors, including some of the industry’s most acclaimed names. Attendees can look forward to meeting Emmy and Ringo Award-winning cartoonist Dean Haspiel, Kingston local and Distinguished Artist Award winner Matthew Pleva, and Harvey Award-winning artist Nick Bertozzi, among others.
Adding to the excitement, the 2025 event poster has been crafted by the talented Charles Fetherolf, known for his work with Dark Horse Comics and Heavy Metal. The poster is a collectible piece in itself, capturing the spirit and creativity of KICx.
For those who support small press, indie comics, graphic novels, and original illustrative art, KICx is a celebration of creativity and community, set against the backdrop of Kingston’s rich artistic heritage. Adult tickets are priced at $10, while students aged 8-17 can join the fun for just $7, and children under 8 get in for free. Whether you are there to discover new artists, meet your favorite creators, or simply enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, you can join in the celebration of independent art and storytelling!
