Time Passes

Melissa Dvozenja-Thomas, Executive Director, Arts Mid-Hudson

The exploration of time passing invites us to observe the subtle changes in our surroundings and within ourselves as days turn into years. As we reflect, we gain insight into how these moments shape our experiences and influence our understanding of life. On Sunday, April 27, 2025, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., the community is invited, either in person or virtually, to the Reading and Book Launch of Shari Diamond’s new artist book, Time Passes, at the Holland Tunnel Revisited in Newburgh, NY.

Time Passes is set to be much more than a typical art exhibition. Featuring readings by esteemed writers such as Myra Goldberg, Kathleen Hill, Joan Larkin, Mary Ann McFadden, Robin Messing, Joan Silber, and Pamela Sneed, this event will explore time’s inescapable passage and its deep ties to memory and identity. These literary voices will accompany Diamond’s evocative visual artistry, creating a multisensory experience that invites attendees to reflect on their own life stories.

In addition to the reading, Time Passes is also a limited edition of 100 hand-bound books, crafted with precision using a Risograph duplicator. Creating books using a Risograph duplicator involves several key steps, including designing your book content digitally, ensuring to separate each color layer, and converting these designs into high-contrast black-and-white images for each color.

The book explores the human condition, including themes of aging, mortality, memory, and the ever-changing nature of our personal narratives—how these stories are preserved, transformed, or lost over time. Drawing inspiration from Joan Didion’s reflections in “Blue Nights,” the project focuses on 60 images from Diamond’s “The 60 Year Project.” Each image captures a significant moment from each year of the artist’s life, serving as a visual chronicle of pivotal experiences.

The photographs, drawn from Diamond’s personal and family archives, have undergone a transformative process of digital drawing and tintype printing. This artistic approach distills each image to its emotional essence, crafting a visual language that speaks to both personal significance and universal themes. Spanning from early childhood to adulthood, the series shows a range of moments—from everyday scenes to life-altering events—telling stories that are both profoundly individual and broadly relatable.

Diamond uses their art practice to investigate a range of topics, including borders and boundaries, sexuality, gender, immortality, impermanence, and human relations. Diamond’s work is held in prestigious collections such as the Leslie-Lohman Museum and The New School Archives and Special Collections. Their striking images have also graced popular television shows, including “Succession” and “Dietland,” and have been exhibited in prominent venues across the United States and internationally in Mexico, Israel, and Japan.

Time Passes invites the public to not only witness but also participate in a collective reflection and celebration of the moments that shape us. By engaging with both the images and the accompanying literary works, attendees will have the opportunity to explore the intersections of personal and shared histories, gaining new insights into how our memories and identities are intertwined.

This event is made possible with support from the New York State Legislature and is administered by Arts Mid-Hudson. It represents a unique opportunity for the community to come together and engage with art that challenges and inspires, leaving a lasting impression on all who attend.
